These 33 Ridiculously Hot Fitness Girls Will Make You Sweat

With the arrival of warmer temps, it’s time to break out your favorite shorts, dresses, and skirts. Of course, this means smooth legs are a must.
Ingrown hairs are a common skin condition, particularly in people whose hair has the tendency to curl back or grow sideways in the hair follicle. These tiny round bumps, some of which have a visible hair trapped inside them, often look like acne and can be both painful and unsightly.
To minimize the development of ingrown hairs:
  • Shave in the direction of the hair growth. Avoid shaving over the same area multiple times or shaving the hair too close to the skin.
  • When using a razor blade, make sure the skin is wet before shaving and use a moisturizing shaving cream, gel, or foam while shaving. Keeping skin moisturized and exfoliated not only makes it easier to shave, but it can help remove dead skin and hairs that may clog the hair follicles, as well as promote hair growth in the right direction.
  • Over the counter products containing benzoyl peroxide, as well as exfoliating ingredients such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid, can help in the treatment and prevention of ingrown hairs.
  • If possible, shave less often. Use of hair-removing creams or clippers instead of blade razors can sometimes help decrease the occurrence of ingrown hairs.
If you have an ingrown hair, coaxing hair out of the “bump” at home by poking or tweezing should be avoided. This can potentially introduce new bacteria into the follicle and worsen the problem.
Even though it’s a bit of an inconvenience, it’s best to wait until razor bumps have resolved before going back to shaving or engaging in further hair removal. Wearing pants for a few days is better than giving yourself a nasty infection!
If you have an ingrown hair that becomes infected, see a board-certified dermatologist. A dermatologist can also recommend a regimen of anti-bacterial washes and creams as well as topical retinoids that can help treat the area and prevent future ingrown hairs.

Banish Pesky Ingrown Hairs for Good

A killer pair of heels might make you feel confident, sexy, and attractive. But, there’s solid evidence that your favorite Jimmy Choos are placing you at risk of serious injury.
In a recent study, collegiate women who wore shoes with 10 cm high heels more than three times per week to their classes developed an imbalance of four functional ankle muscles. Although wearing high-heeled shoes appeared to strengthen ankle muscles at first, prolonged use eventually caused an imbalance. This imbalance is widely considered a crucial predictor of ankle injury.
So, even if you love the way you look in heels, it’s best for your health to limit the heels to special occasions only and to make ankle strengthening a part of your fitness routine. “It is clinically important for wearers of high heels to regularly perform ankle strengthening exercises, such as heel walking, toe tappers, and heel raises, and to limit the frequency of wearing high-heeled shoes as preventative measures,” said Dr. Yong-Seok Jee, co-author of the International Journal of Clinical Practice article.
If you’re looking for alternative shoes to wear, may we suggest investing in a pair of classic flat boots or pretty ballet flats? You’ll still be stylish, but your feet will thank you for the kindness!

Learn Why You Should Think Twice Before Reaching for Your High Heels

A coat of mascara and a bit of lipstick can do wonders for your self esteem, but not if the makeup and makeup remover you select makes your skin break out like a teenager. If you have sensitive skin and wear makeup regularly, new research suggests papain may be an ingredient to watch out for.
Papain is an industrial protein-degrading enzyme that can cause strong allergic reactions of the skin. Scientists from the Messerli Research Institute of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, the Medical University of Vienna, and the University of Vienna recently published the results of a study looking at papain use in cosmetics in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
Papain is found naturally in papaya.  It is sometimes often referred to as a “plant-based pepsin” in reference to the digestive enzyme pepsin that is present in the stomach. The cosmetic industry often uses papain in exfoliating treatments to remove dead surface skin.
Papain has an enormous structural similarity with one of the most important house dust mite allergens.  Papain can cause a problem because it induces a breakdown of the cell-cell junctions that join together layers of skin. On the skin, papain results in a loss of the barrier function. However, the permeation of the skin barrier does not appear to be a prerequisite for sensitization toward papain.
Officially, researchers recommend that people with sensitive skin avoid the enzyme (EC Number 3.4.22.2) as much as possible and observe the ingredients declaration for consumer products as regulated by EU Directive 2000/13/EC. Parents should also try to avoid using skin care products with papain for their young children, even if the child is not known to have any allergies or sensitivities.

Got Sensitive Skin? Watch Out for This Ingredient When Buying Makeup

If your idea of a bedtime routine involves binge watching Netflix till 3 am, you may be setting yourself up for long term health problems.
When we talk about sleep, most of us only focus on whether or not we’re getting the recommended six to eight hours per night. But, this type of thinking is surprisingly shortsighted. According to a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, when you sleep matters just as much as how long you sleep. Night owls are more likely to develop diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and sarcopenia than early risers, even when they sleep the same number of hours per day.

The study looked at the difference between night and morning chronotypes, also known as your natural sleep-wake cycles. The results suggested that staying awake late at night is likely to cause sleep loss, poor sleep quality, and eating at inappropriate times. After several years, this leads to permanent metabolic changes that up the risk of developing diabetes and other medical issues.
“Regardless of lifestyle, people who stayed up late faced a higher risk of developing health problems like diabetes or reduced muscle mass than those who were early risers,” said Nan Hee Kim, MD, PhD, of Korea University College of Medicine in Ansan, Korea. “This could be caused by night owls’ tendency to have poorer sleep quality and to engage in unhealthy behaviors like smoking, late-night eating, and a sedentary lifestyle.”
Changing your natural sleep preference isn’t easy, but may be well the worth the effort if you already have a family history of these types of health problems. Put down the remote, turn off the TV, and resolve to stick to a respectable bedtime no matter what new shows Netflix decides to add!

Night Owls Beware: When You Sleep is Just As Important as How Much You Sleep

When we think about aging, most of us worry about physical problems like heart trouble or a bad hip. However, it’s crucial that we not overlook the importance of staying on top of mental health issues.
Joe Wilmoth, an associate professor in the MSU School of Human Sciences and researcher with the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, says the lifestyle changes that older people often experience can trigger depression. Financial challenges, the death of loved ones, increased physical limitations, and loneliness can all play a role in a senior’s mental health.
“As we get older, we often have to deal with a variety of chronic diseases,” he said. “These can range from hearing loss, failing eyesight, joint problems, thyroid disorders and low testosterone levels to poor immune system responses, type 2 diabetes, heart problems, and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Depression is also related to stress, a lack of exercise, inadequate sleep, alcohol consumption, medications, and poor nutrition.”
Family members and caretakers can help seniors by learning how to recognize early signs of depression. These include:
  • A change of appetite and sleep patterns
  • Change in daily living activities
  • Lack of energy, motivation, or interest in daily activities
  • Listlessness
  • Poor concentration
  • Difficulty making decisions.
  • Irritability
  • Talk of hurting themselves or suicide
Mild forms of depression often respond to regular exercise, a proper diet, and engaging in enjoyable activities like playing with a pet or spending time with loved ones. However, more serious issues will require a combination of talk therapy and medication.

Keep the Seniors in Your Life Safe by Learning How to Recognize the Signs of Depression

Searching for #thinspiration on your favorite social media site can lead to some disturbing results. Images of extremely thin women, often focused on just one particularly skinny body part, are accompanied by messages like “I want to be so thin that people whisper how skinny I’ve gotten behind my back” or “Because the pain of looking in the mirror hurts more than starving.”
A new paper from the University of California, Davis criticizes these images, saying the #thinspiration trend harms women even if they aren’t actively seeking this type of content.
Doctoral candidate Jannath Ghaznavi and associate professor Laramie Taylor in the Department of Communication are the authors of the paper “Bones, body parts, and sex appeal: An analysis of #thinspiration images on popular social media.” Their paper was recently published in Body Image: An International Journal of Research.
For their study, Ghaznavi and Taylor examined about 300 photographs from Twitter and Pinterest postings that used the terms “thinspiration” and/or “thinspo” to tag images and ideas promoting extreme thinness. Many of the images cast eating disorders in a positive light, turning serious medical illnesses into a dieting tool.
“Imagine a teenage girl or even a young woman looking for inspiration using terms such as ‘attractive,’ ‘fit,’ or ‘pretty,’” Ghaznavi said. “She will likely find images of headless, scantily clad, sexualized women and their body parts. A young woman looking at these image may think that’s what she should look like. That could prompt these girls and women to resort to extreme dieting, excessive exercise, or other harmful behaviors in order to achieve this thin ideal.”
Although censoring social media is difficult, it’s not hard to take it upon yourself to be a role model for other women. Instead of sharing #thinspiration images, why not utilize a more empowering hashtag like #independentwoman, #nobodyshame, #ownyourpretty, #superwoman, or #makeithappen?

Why the #Thinspiration Trend Needs to Stop

Ever wish you could lose weight without having to give up chocolate for good? If so, you’ll be thrilled by the shocking conclusion of a study recently published in the International Archives of Medicine. While you can’t quite indulge your fantasy of nibbling your way through Willy Wonka’s factory just yet, science is now on the side of chocoholics everywhere. Dark chocolate, thanks to its high concentration of flavonoids, is nature’s most delicious tasting diet pill.
According to lead author Johannes Bohannon, research director of the nonprofit Institute of Diet and Health, chocolate can in fact be part of a reasonable weight loss plan. In his study, weight loss efforts were compared from a control group, a low-carb group, and a low-carb group given an added 42 grams of dark chocolate each day. The low-carb group lost more weight than the control group over the course of the study, as expected. However, the low-carb plus chocolate group lost 10% more weight than participants simply following a low-carb diet without any sweets.
Even better, the benefits of chocolate consumption appear to be long lasting. The chocolate consuming group was more successful at keeping the weight off, while also reporting improved sleep patterns and lower blood cholesterol levels.
“To our surprise, the effect of chocolate is real,”says Bohannon. “It is not enough to just consume chocolate, but in combination with exercise and reduction in carbohydrates, our data indicate that chocolate can be a weight loss accelerator.”

Eating Chocolate Can Help You Lose Weight – Really!

A journal isn’t just a place for teen girls to jot down thoughts about their latest crush. New research shows that mothers of special needs children can help manage caregiving-related stress through journal writing, allowing them to better focus on meeting the needs of their family.
Associate Professor Rondalyn V. Whitney, the director and founding chair of Clarkson University’s occupational therapy program, reports that mothers can get burned out if there is no one around to help them with day-to-day tasks. Taking advantage of support resources in the community is difficult because their children can’t be left unattended.
Stressed out moms have a negative impact on the entire family. “High maternal stress causes paternal stress, and high maternal stress decreases the child’s ability to benefit from treatment,” Whitney said.
Whitney’s research followed mothers of autistic children who were encouraged to express their feelings in an online journal. She observed a decrease in stress and an improvement in the relationship between the mother and child. This was likely due to the fact that journal writing gives moms a safe place to talk about any negative feelings they may have without having an adverse impact on the child. Writing also lets them reframe their problems and work toward finding solutions.
“There was a shift in what the mothers attributed the stress to,” she said. “Instead of saying, ‘My stress is due to being a mother,’ it shifts to, ‘I have a stressful life.’”
Keep in mind that you don’t need to be a professional writer to benefit from the therapeutic value of journaling. Spelling and grammar mistakes are perfectly OK. The goal is to provide you with a safe place to tell your own story, whatever it may be.

If You’re the Parent of a Special Needs Child, Here’s Why You Need to Start a Journal

Parenting a child with ADHD isn’t easy, but new evidence suggests that these kids can benefit from technologies originally developed for the elderly.
SINTEF researchers are now investigating whether technologies such as digital calendars and smart watches can also help children with ADHD better manage their daily lives. “Our experience is that it takes time to set the systems up and that using them can sometimes be difficult,”says researcher Øystein Dale. “But we can also claim that these are aids that can be of benefit to these groups.”
For example, children and young people with ADHD can find it difficult to keep appointments and easy to forget what they have to bring with them in different situations. Their lives can be made easier if they use a smartwatch or a calendar displayed on a mobile phone or tablet. Such aids may use a combination of pictures, sounds or text to remind them about where they have to be and when, and the things they have to do.
Dale, together with SINTEF colleague Lisbet Grut, has been looking into how smartphones, tablets, smart watches and shared calendar systems can provide support for children and their families in their everyday lives.Since most modern children are already fascinated by technology, these interventions are a typically a welcomed way to help ADHD kids stay on task. “We believe that our knowledge about how technology can be applied may enable children to function better in their day-to-day lives, both at school and in other social situations,” says Dale. “This will contribute towards enhancing their quality of life, and that of their families.”

A Simple Way to Make Life Easier for ADHD Kids

If you’ve been avoiding a night on the town due to the concerns about dealing with a hangover the next day, you’re in luck. With the introduction of a herbal supplement called PartySmart, you may be able to party all night long without fear of pesky hangover symptoms the next day.
In an article from Anthropology & Medicine, Laurent Pordié discusses the introduction and marketing of PartySmart. This drug claims to protect the liver and prevent alcohol-related hangovers. Created  by The Himalaya Drug Company in India in 2005, PartySmart should be consumed 30 minutes prior to drinking alcohol to prevent common hangover symptoms such as headache, nausea, irritability, and fatigue. However, please keep in mind that PartySmart will not make it safe to operate a motor vehicle while driving. You’ll still be considered legally intoxicated, you just won’t experience hangover symptoms the following day.
PartySmart is aggressively promoted in clubs and pubs throughout India, even though  there’s been controversy over the portrayal of promoting alcohol consumption amongst the middle classes in such a devout country. To work around this issue, executives were forced to revise their strategy by promoting the product as ‘targeting liver disorders’, thus ridding themselves of the moral repercussions of alcohol consumption.
In the United States, PartySmart is available online through retailers such as Amazon.com. With summer fast approaching, now would be a great time to give this unique miracle pill a try.
